EPUNTO Interim Management at the e-volution 2017 Congress on Business and Digital Transformation

Last Thursday, October 5th, Valladolid became the capital of Business and Digital Transformation with the celebration of the e-volution 2017 Congress . Organized by El Norte de Castilla, it proved, as expected, to be an enlightening day that incorporated into the city's natural dialogue such relevant topics as the future of our societies in the age of Artificial Intelligence, e-schools, and the sharing economy.

21 digital experts and enthusiasts from companies and organizations throughout the national and international territory, such as Google, Wallapop, LinkedIn, INCIBE, BlaBlaCar, Grupo Sothis, Tutellus, PepsiCo, Telefónica Educación Digital, the Data Economy Initiative or EPUNTO Interim Management among othersThey took to the stage to share their vision and experience on the subject, leaving the audience speechless with the latest developments in AI and other proposals for social innovation.

We are a fortunate company for several reasons, and one of the things we are most proud of is the commitment and curiosity of our team.

“I can’t help but feel proud to have been here once again, in the right place, at the right time. This is the feeling I had listening to so many brilliant figures in the digital transformation and the so-called ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution,’ a historic milestone we are fortunate enough to be experiencing. It was fascinating to listen to the professionals and entrepreneurs who participated in the fifth edition of the e-volución 2017 Congress—especially insightful individuals with extraordinary strategic vision. This was the case with Luis Martín, CEO of Barrabés Bizz, and Víctor Fernández, CEO of Room Mate, a company that constantly focuses on what to do to satisfy its customers’ needs, rather than how to do things. Considering customers as the epicenter of strategy is the only way to move forward into the future,” stated Víctor Fernández. I was particularly impressed by Jaime Rodríguez, General Manager for Spain & Portugal at BlaBlaCar, a world-renowned company in the sharing economy, and Juan Luis González, founder and CEO of Orange 3, a vibrant individual who inspires enthusiasm and positivity in anyone wanting to embark on such a unique project as his. However, I also heard statements that should concern us all, such as the one made by Alberto Gómez Barahona, Rector of the Isabel I Online University, who asserted that Spanish universities are lagging behind in the digital transformation rather than leading it. Other equally worrying issues were raised by several speakers, who pointed out that Europe is falling behind due to its over-regulatory approach. "While others are researching and developing, in Europe we regulate and paralyze, so we will never be a leader in the digital realm," stated Raúl Suárez, Head of Corporate Business at LinkedIn, echoing the sentiments of other speakers on this point. Personally, if I had to choose between the different groups of presentations, I would undoubtedly choose the one featuring Emilio del Prado, president of the Data Economy Initiative and CEO of EPUNTO Interim Managementand Catalina Jiménez, director of UNE Consulting and Information Systems at the Sothis Group. Perhaps because strategic marketing is one of the professional specialties I've practiced most throughout my career, everything related to technologies involving Big Data and Business Intelligence is particularly appealing to me. Of course, the fact that my company, Veratya Corporate Strategies, is an active member of the Data Economy Initiative is also a significant motivating factor in this regard. Catalina Jiménez delivered a highly technical presentation in which she emphasized to the audience the urgent need for companies, regardless of size, to consider Big Data as essential for the survival and competitiveness of their organizations. For his part, Emilio del Prado presented a captivating narrative that straddled the line between fiction and reality, between what could be and what is already present in our society. The “Fourth Industrial Revolution,” its consequences, and its transitional parallels with other revolutions in economic history were the central theme of this remarkable presentation, delivered by one of the most insightful and qualified minds currently working in the field of Data Economy. Emilio del Prado lamented the slow pace of Big Data implementation in Spain and, from the stage of the e-volución 2017 Congress, offered key insights for understanding the revolution that is already underway: “In the fourth industrial revolution, very cheap labor will have less weight. The companies that will win will be those that are close to their consumers.” This and other assertions, born from Emilio del Prado’s daily experience in the field of digital transformation, along with the originality of his presentation, made it one of the most brilliant contributions of the event. To conclude this brief account of my impressions of the conference, I must mention the closing address by Álvaro Nadal, Minister of Energy, Tourism, and Digital Agenda. I was pleasantly surprised by his command of the subject and the clarity with which he presented the national landscape regarding digital strategy. Minister Nadal highlighted, among other issues, the enormous shortage of professionals in the ICT sector in Spain, a truly worrying fact in a country with alarmingly high unemployment figures. The Minister closed the conference with good news: the approval of 50.000 billion euros by the Council of Ministers on Friday, October 6th, to bring the internet to areas of Spain that still lack the necessary infrastructure.
