How to explain in simple terms what an interim manager is

TODAY

I was recently invited to give a short presentation (limited to 5 minutes) to explain the concept of Interim Management in the Ibero-American Seminar Attitudes 2.0 Held in Valladolid, it was a very diverse forum of professionals. The challenge was significant, because I realized that very few were aware of the existence of the interim manager.

But everyone knows the barber's trade, which I used to construct a simple, light and, why not say it, even poetic metaphor.

It's widely known that professional activity can be carried out in a handful of ways: broadly speaking, we can be technicians, trainers/educators, and consultants. Are there any other models? Perhaps…

We all frequently encounter the same situation:

I need a haircut…and I can't do it myself:

I don't know how to do it.
I don't see myself with perspective, from a sufficient distance to have a global view of the situation
I look at myself in the mirror every day, so I have a biased and subjective view.

The solution I resort to is the usual one in these cases:

Hire a hairdresser

A consultant is not required. The decision to cut my hair has already been made, I don't consider other options and I need action, not advice.

No trainer is requiredI'm not interested in learning to cut my own hair because it seems like a poor investment for the return I would get, even if I could cut the hair of all my friends and family.

No technician is requiredI need a professional who can make strategic decisions (cut style, general technique, etc.) and tactical decisions (tools to use, specific products, etc.) based on minimal initial instructions, without constantly consulting me.

The hairdresser is an "Interim Manager":

  • Execute a decision that has already been made
  • for the necessary time
  • making the most appropriate intermediate decisions (cut, wash, dye, shave, fill, conceal,…)
  • It has a completion plan: when the hairdresser finishes their work, I can maintain my hair by following some basic instructions.

And now the key question:

Are you a hairdresser or a client?
