“40 companies from 50 countries explain who hires Interim Management services and why”

On "First International Study on Interim Management" Forty of the largest Interim Management firms, based in 50 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, participated. Below, we present some of the most relevant data on the international contracting of transition management services.

Acceptance and consolidation of Interim Management:

67,35% of the business leaders surveyed believe that their country views Interim Management services positively. 48,98% believe that the sector is well-established.

Size of companies that contract Interim Management services:

According to the aforementioned study, out of every 100 hires, 32,63 are requested by companies with 501 to 1.000 employees, 28,82 by companies with more than 1.000 employees, 26,41 by companies with 100 to 500 employees, and 12,14 by companies with fewer than 100 employees.

From what management positions are Interim Management services contracted?

60,56% of hires are made by the general management (39,80%) or the HR department (20,76%). These are followed by the board of directors (13,67%), finance department (6,94%), operations department (5,76%), and country manager (5,31%). Only 0,30% of IM hires are made by the marketing and communications departments, and 7,46% by other departments or related agents.

Common motivations for hiring Interim Management services:

95,92% of the business leaders surveyed indicated change management and general or specific management functions as the main reasons for hiring Interim Management services. This was followed by restructuring and turnaround of companies or business units, supply chain management, and procurement (93,88%). Next were the temporary replacement of an executive to manage special projects (91,84%) and cost review and reduction (91,84%). Less common situations for hiring Interim Management included executive monitoring (51,02%) and the launch or reinforcement of new products and services (55,10%).

Most in-demand positions for Interim Management services:

The most sought-after position is Chief Financial Officer (CFO) (95,92%). This is followed by Chief Operating Officers (COO) (89,80%), CEOs (87,76%), HR Directors (77,55%), Project Management Directors (73,47%), Chief Technical Officers (CTO/CIO/IT) (65,31%), and Purchasing Directors (55,10%). Communications Director is the least requested position by clients of Interim Management firms (12,24%). Of every 100 Interim Management hires, 21,27 are CFOs, 16,14 are CEOs, 15,90% are Operations Directors, and 10,73% are HR Directors.
